Skylight Repair Farnborough
Skylight Repair services in Farnborough
A roof window that admits water or drops in its frame no longer performs as it was installed to. The damage is rarely confined to the unit itself: water passing the flashing marks the plaster and saturates the insulation beneath. Farnborough housing is overwhelmingly twentieth century, from the tree-lined avenues of speculative Victorian villas built for army officers in the 1860s to the estates at Cove, Southwood and West Heath completed since.
A director conducts the initial inspection, examining the unit, its flashing and the kerb it is bedded in. Where the surround is at fault and the glazing is sound, the quotation prices only the work actually required. We respond within 48 hours. Your written, itemised quote follows within 48 hours of the inspection, with no hidden extras.

What brings Farnborough homeowners to us for skylight repair?
The roof windows across Farnborough were installed in distinct phases. Retrofits sit in the Victorian avenues laid out for army officers from the 1860s, later units in the estate housing at Cove, Southwood and West Heath. Five situations account for the majority of Farnborough skylight repair enquiries:
Water entering at the surround rather than the glazing
A roof window is frequently assumed to be the source of water that entered at its edges. The surround is separate work from the unit itself, and where the lead has lifted, roof flashing repair resolves it without disturbing the glazing at all.
Farnborough sits in a valley between the River Blackwater to the east and higher ground to the west, and the older avenues on the lower ground take driven rain that works a lifted lead surround hard.
A cold patch directly under the roof window
A room that is noticeably colder beneath its roof window has usually lost the seal between the frame and the kerb, or the insulation has slumped back between the rafters at the reveal. Both are reachable without removing the unit.
Post-war streets on the valley floor were built with shallow roofs and limited depth at the eaves, so loft rooms formed within them sit close beneath their roof windows, and a lost seal is felt immediately.
A roof window inherited with the house
A roof window fitted by a previous owner is inherited with the property. The paperwork transferred at the sale frequently carries no record of when the unit was installed or who dressed the lead around it. A roof window of unknown age warrants inspection while its flashing and the covering around it remain sound.
Much of Farnborough’s stock was built as speculative or rented housing and has changed hands many times since the 1860s.
Several roof windows failing simultaneously
Homes fitted with two or three roof windows at the same time tend to reach the end of their service life together. Addressing them in a single visit costs less than three separate attendances, and the lead can be dressed to match across the whole slope.
Estate housing at Cove, Southwood and West Heath was built to one specification within a handful of years after the war, so its roof windows are now reaching this condition together.
A unit that may be past repairing
Not every roof window is worth repairing. Where the frame has moved on its kerb and the glazing has failed as well, a repair lasts only a few months instead of years, and a fresh skylight installation in the existing opening is the most appropriate solution. Where the frame is sound, we will confirm that a repair is sufficient.
Units on the Victorian avenues and the post-war streets differ by decades, so each frame is assessed against the covering around it.
How does Farnborough housing shape a skylight repair?
Farnborough occupies a valley between the River Blackwater to the east and higher ground to the west, and most of its housing dates from the twentieth century. Tree-lined avenues of speculative Victorian villas, laid out from the 1860s to house army officers, sit on the lower ground; inter-war and post-war streets cover the slopes above them; the estates at Cove, Southwood and West Heath were built in interlocking concrete tile since.
The older avenues carry units retrofitted between rafters and purlins, with flashing dressed into slate laid long before them. Post-war roofs are shallower, and a unit there sits closer to the eaves. The estate roofs carry factory-fitted units of one specification.
Access follows the valley: the lower streets take a ladder from level ground, while the higher western slopes frequently need a scaffold.

What happens when we repair a skylight in Farnborough?
A director diagnoses the fault before the repair is quoted. This is what the visit involves on a Farnborough property, from the initial inspection through to the completed repair.
A director inspects the unit before anything is priced
A director establishes the point of entry before the unit itself is assumed to be responsible. Where it proves to have arrived from a valley, a cracked tile or a lifted flashing further up the slope, a director records that in the written findings. The team then resolves it as a roof leak repair instead.
Findings documented within 48 hours
What is wrong, what is proposed and what it costs are documented within 48 hours of that inspection. The quotation itemises every component to be renewed and prices the labour separately. There is no obligation and there are no hidden extras: the price you accept is the price you pay.
The room below protected before access equipment is installed
The team lays dust sheets beneath the opening and repositions anything standing underneath it with you. Where a visit has to leave the unit open, the team makes the roof weathertight before leaving the property. Debris from the reveal is removed progressively as the work proceeds.
One team from diagnosis through to completion
The work is completed by our own team throughout, with no subcontracted labour. A director oversees the repair and remains your point of contact from the initial inspection to the final visit. Any addition to the scope is presented to you before it is carried out.
The finish made good and the repair explained
The team dresses the lead down correctly, leaves the glazing clean and makes good the surrounding finish at the point of repair. A director explains what was done and what to monitor before the team leaves. The written record of the repair follows with the invoice.

Frequently asked questions
Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Skylight Repair service in Farnborough.
Is my Farnborough skylight worth repairing?
Most are. What decides it is the condition of the frame, the kerb it is bedded on and the lead around it, all of which the initial inspection establishes. Where those are serviceable, a repair is the appropriate course and usually limited in scope. Where the frame has moved and the surround has failed with it, we will confirm this before any work is booked.
How soon can you inspect a leaking skylight in Farnborough?
We respond within 48 hours. A leaking roof window takes priority over planned work, because water at the reveal reaches the plaster and the insulation immediately. Farnborough runs from the older avenues in the south up to the higher ground on its western side, and we cover the valley floor, Cove, Southwood and West Heath alike. A first inspection is ordinarily arranged within that period. The flashing and the side soakers are examined then, before any quotation is produced.
Can you repair a skylight you did not fit in Farnborough?
Yes, and most of the units we repair were fitted by another installer, often long before the current owner moved in. The work proceeds from the arrangement already on the roof: the unit, the kerb beneath it and the flashing kit around it. A serviceable frame is retained and the surround renewed around it. Where a unit is genuinely beyond sensible repair, we will state this clearly.
Will you need to examine the rest of the Farnborough roof?
Only as far as answering the question accurately requires. A roof window sits within a covering, and Farnborough properties carry coverings of very different ages, from the Victorian slate of the older avenues to the concrete interlocking tile still on its original underlay across the post-war estates. If the battens, the underlay or the flashing are in doubt, a roof inspection records their condition rather than by visual assessment alone. Where the covering itself has failed, the quotation includes that work as well.
How do I arrange a skylight repair in Farnborough?
By telephone or through the contact form. A director attends to inspect the unit, the kerb and the lead around it, at a time arranged around your day. The written, itemised findings and price follow within 48 hours of that inspection, and a director then schedules the repair at your convenience. The same applies wherever you are across our Farnborough service area.

About Farnborough
Farnborough
About FarnboroughDarrell Eugene Cornell (August 19, 1932 – October 10, 1984) was Northrop’s chief test pilot in the early 1980s. He was killed on October 10, 1984, at Suwon Air Base, while performing a demonstration flight for the South Korean Air Force (ROKAF). The F-20, 82-0062, c/n GG1001, N4416T, he was piloting stalled after a series of climbing rolls performed with flaps and gear extended. Cornell was not able to recover the aircraft from the uncontrolled stall. Cornell was also the lead test pilot for Northrop’s RF-5E Tigereye, a reconnaissance version of the low-cost F-5E fighter aircraft.
He was featured in the April 1984 issue of LIFE magazine in an article entitled “Edwards Air Force Base Pilots”, together with Doug Benefieds, Chuck Sewell, Tony LeVier, and Russell O’Quinn.
Cornell was born in Moorhead, Minnesota, grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, and was a former USAF pilot. He was an alumnus of North Dakota State University. He was also an astronaut candidate with NASA in 1963, although he was not selected to join Group 3. He began at Northrop in 1962. His display performances flying the F-20 in Paris, France (Le Bourget 1983) and Farnborough, England in 1984 are remembered by many as some of the finest ever performed at these airshows.
