Skylight Installation Farnborough
Skylight Installation services in Farnborough
A skylight introduces daylight into rooms that cannot be lit from a wall: landings, loft rooms and the middle of a single-storey extension. Forming the opening is a roofing operation, so the tiles, underlay, battens and rafters around it determine how the installation is planned. Farnborough’s Victorian avenues stand apart from the post-war estates further out, and each generation of roof leaves a different room short of light.
A director conducts your survey, measures the opening and inspects the tiles, underlay and rafters around it. No unit is quoted before that visit. Our directors bring over 15 years of combined hands-on experience to every installation. The written, itemised quote prices the unit, the kerb, the access, the flashing kit and the internal making good separately, with no obligation and no hidden extras.

When do Farnborough homeowners fit a skylight?
Three rooms in a Farnborough property receive less daylight than the rest of the house:
- The loft beneath a steep Victorian slate roof
- The landing with no glazing above it
- The rear of a single-storey extension
Farnborough homeowners most often ask about five situations:
An existing skylight at the end of its life
Misted glazing, a frame that no longer opens smoothly and spares that stopped being made are the usual signs a unit needs replacing. The existing kerb and opening are reused, so the replacement avoids the timber work of the first installation. Where the frame and seals can be saved instead, skylight repair is the better course, and we will confirm that.
Farnborough’s growth left whole roads of semis built within a few years, so their roof windows reach the end of their service life together.
A leak at the edge of an old skylight
Water showing at the corner of a skylight indicates a failure in the lead and soakers around it more often than in the unit itself. We establish which has failed before recommending anything. Where the surround is at fault, roof flashing repair resolves it without a new unit. Where the unit has reached the end of its service life, we replace it.
On the steep slate roofs of Farnborough’s Victorian avenues, the lead flashing typically gives out long before the slate itself.
A dark kitchen or rear extension
A single-storey extension places the centre of the room a long way from any window, and light levels fall noticeably towards the middle. A skylight set on a kerb in the felt above the working end lights it from directly overhead.
The semi-detached pairs across Farnborough’s post-war estates carry deep rear extensions, with the kitchen furthest from any window.
A stairwell or landing with no window
Stairwells and landings are the rooms most often built without glazing, and they stay dim at midday. A roof window trimmed into the rafters above a stairwell lights both floors from one opening, and the flashing is weathered into the surrounding covering.
The villas along Farnborough’s tree-lined Victorian avenues are mainly two storeys, so a stairwell there runs the full height of the building.
A bathroom needing ventilation as well as light
A bathroom window that faces the neighbours is usually frosted, curtained or never opened. An opening skylight provides the daylight and the ventilation from above instead. Steam clears upwards through the unit, and the kerb and flashing keep the opening weathertight.
Where a bathroom in one of Farnborough’s estate semis sits against the party wall, that wall can take no glazing, so the opening is formed in the roof slope above it.
What does Farnborough housing stock mean for fitting a skylight?
Farnborough’s roofs come from two distinct waves. The Victorian avenues, laid out from the 1860s for army officers on wide tree-lined streets, carry slate on steep pitches with tall brick stacks. The town then grew through the 20th century into the semi-detached estates and business-park housing that now make up most of Rushmoor, roofed mainly in concrete interlocking tile.
Each wave wants a skylight differently. The avenue villas keep a dim stairwell or landing behind a handsome frontage, while the estate semis carry deep-plan kitchens and converted lofts with no window of their own. On the avenue villas, a unit is planned to match the roof structure either side of a semi-detached pair, so the finished opening reads as one job rather than two, and each era’s rafter setup is settled at the survey before any unit is ordered.

How does a skylight installation in Farnborough work?
A skylight installation follows an established sequence, and each stage is confirmed with you before anyone reaches the roof. On a Farnborough property it proceeds as follows:
A survey before anything is ordered
A director attends to measure the opening and inspect the tiles, underlay, battens and rafters around it. The unit is then specified for both the room and the roof. Where a covering is failing as a whole, we set out roof replacement options before any cutting is priced.
A written quote with nothing hidden
Your written, itemised quote follows within 48 hours of the survey. It prices the unit, the access, the flashing kit and the internal making good separately. There is no obligation, and the price you accept is the price you pay.
Your home protected while we work
We position dust sheets beneath the opening and clear the room with you before any cutting begins. The roof is left weathertight at the end of every working visit, with the battens and underlay kept dry. Every other room remains in use while the installation continues.
The opening cut and the unit fitted
One team cuts the opening, trims the timbers where the survey requires it, and installs the unit. The flashing is then weathered into the surrounding tiles or slates. A director oversees the installation from the initial visit to completion.
Finished inside as well as out
The reveal is made good and left ready for decoration, and the glazing is left clean. A director inspects the flashing from the roof and the reveal from the room below. The handover documentation for the unit is provided in writing.

Frequently asked questions
Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Skylight Installation service in Farnborough.
What decides the price of a skylight installation in Farnborough?
Three elements move the price more than anything else:
- The unit: its dimensions, its glazing, and whether it opens or is fixed
- The access: a tower beside the elevation, or scaffolding to the eaves
- The making good: the reveal, the plastering and the decoration around it
Those three are priced as separate lines, so nothing is combined into a single figure. There is no obligation and there are no hidden extras.
Do I need scaffolding for a skylight installation in Farnborough?
That is determined by the roof itself, not by a general policy. A single unit is frequently installed from a tower positioned at the eaves. On Farnborough’s two-storey estate semis that is usually sufficient. Slate breaks underfoot more readily than interlocking tile, so on the Victorian avenues the work is carried out from a scaffold. The survey establishes which, and the quote includes whatever access the installation needs, arranged and removed as part of the work.
Who supplies the skylight unit for a Farnborough installation?
We source and supply units matched to the roof and the room. A unit you have already purchased is installed wherever it is suitable for the opening. Where it is not, we will state that clearly before any cutting begins. Our own team then installs the unit, forms the kerb and weathers the flashing on every Farnborough installation, with no subcontracted labour.
Can a skylight be fitted to an older Farnborough roof?
Usually, provided the battens, underlay and rafters around the opening are sound. Farnborough’s oldest roofs sit on the Victorian avenue villas laid out for army officers from the 1860s, roofed in slate, while the estate semis further out carry concrete interlocking tile from later in the 20th century. Where the roof’s overall condition is in doubt, a roof inspection establishes what it can carry before any cutting begins. We will advise against opening a covering at the end of its service life.
How do I arrange a skylight installation in Farnborough?

Farnborough
About FarnboroughDarrell Eugene Cornell (August 19, 1932 – October 10, 1984) was Northrop’s chief test pilot in the early 1980s. He was killed on October 10, 1984, at Suwon Air Base, while performing a demonstration flight for the South Korean Air Force (ROKAF). The F-20, 82-0062, c/n GG1001, N4416T, he was piloting stalled after a series of climbing rolls performed with flaps and gear extended. Cornell was not able to recover the aircraft from the uncontrolled stall. Cornell was also the lead test pilot for Northrop’s RF-5E Tigereye, a reconnaissance version of the low-cost F-5E fighter aircraft.
He was featured in the April 1984 issue of LIFE magazine in an article entitled “Edwards Air Force Base Pilots”, together with Doug Benefieds, Chuck Sewell, Tony LeVier, and Russell O’Quinn.
Cornell was born in Moorhead, Minnesota, grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, and was a former USAF pilot. He was an alumnus of North Dakota State University. He was also an astronaut candidate with NASA in 1963, although he was not selected to join Group 3. He began at Northrop in 1962. His display performances flying the F-20 in Paris, France (Le Bourget 1983) and Farnborough, England in 1984 are remembered by many as some of the finest ever performed at these airshows.
