Skylight Installation Gosport
Skylight Installation services in Gosport
A skylight introduces daylight into rooms that cannot be lit from a wall: landings, loft rooms and the middle of a single-storey extension. Forming the opening is a roofing operation, so the tiles, underlay, battens and rafters around it determine how the installation is planned. Gosport’s harbourside terraces and villas sit close to the naval estates at Rowner and Bridgemary, and each carries its own daylight gaps.
A director conducts your survey, measures the opening and inspects the tiles, underlay and rafters around it. No unit is quoted before that visit. Our directors bring over 15 years of combined hands-on experience to every installation. The written, itemised quote prices the unit, the kerb, the access, the flashing kit and the internal making good separately, with no obligation and no hidden extras.

When do Gosport homeowners fit a skylight?
Three rooms in a Gosport property receive less daylight than the rest of the house:
- The loft beneath a slate roof close to the harbour
- The landing with no glazing above it
- The rear of a single-storey extension
Gosport homeowners most often ask about five situations:
An existing skylight at the end of its life
Misted glazing, a frame that no longer opens smoothly and spares that stopped being made are the usual signs a unit needs replacing. The existing kerb and opening are reused, so the replacement avoids the timber work of the first installation. Where the frame and seals can be saved instead, skylight repair is the better course, and we will confirm that.
Most units now due for replacement sit on the naval estate housing rebuilt at Rowner in the early 2000s.
A leak at the edge of an old skylight
Water showing at the corner of a skylight indicates a failure in the lead and soakers around it more often than in the unit itself. We establish which has failed before recommending anything. Where the surround is at fault, roof flashing repair resolves it without a new unit. Where the unit has reached the end of its service life, we replace it.
On the terraces close to Portsmouth Harbour, salt air off the water reaches the lead flashing before it reaches the slate.
A dark kitchen or rear extension
A single-storey extension places the centre of the room a long way from any window, and light levels fall noticeably towards the middle. A skylight set on a kerb in the felt above the working end lights it from directly overhead.
Gosport’s terraced streets around the harbour carry extended kitchens set well back from the front windows.
A stairwell or landing with no window
Stairwells and landings are the rooms most often built without glazing, and they stay dim at midday. A roof window trimmed into the rafters above a stairwell lights both floors from one opening, and the flashing is weathered into the surrounding covering.
The Victorian villas and terraces near the harbour are mainly two storeys, so a stairwell there runs the full height of the building.
A tired plastic dome on a flat roof
The domes fitted to flat roofs decades ago discolour with age and retain very little heat. A modern flat skylight on a new kerb, with the felt or membrane dressed up to it, raises both the daylight and the thermal performance of the opening.
The flat-roofed extensions common across Gosport’s naval estate housing at Rowner and Bridgemary carry plenty of these ageing domes.
What does Gosport housing stock mean for fitting a skylight?
Gosport’s roofs divide by distance from the water and by date of build. Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas cluster close to Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, roofed in slate and clay tile on tight plots. Further out, the naval and dockyard estates at Rowner and Bridgemary were built through the mid-20th century and largely rebuilt again from the 1990s, mostly under concrete interlocking tile.
The room that gains most from a skylight differs with distance from the water. The harbourside terraces keep dim landings and stairwells behind narrow frontages, while the estate houses carry deep-plan kitchens and lofts with no window of their own. On the terraced streets, access for the work is set at the front boundary where the pavement allows it, and each era’s rafter setup is settled at the survey before any unit is ordered.

How does a skylight installation in Gosport work?
A skylight installation follows an established sequence, and each stage is confirmed with you before anyone reaches the roof. On a Gosport property it proceeds as follows:
A survey before anything is ordered
A director attends to measure the opening and inspect the tiles, underlay, battens and rafters around it. The unit is then specified for both the room and the roof. Where a covering is failing as a whole, we set out roof replacement options before any cutting is priced.
A written quote with nothing hidden
Your written, itemised quote follows within 48 hours of the survey. It prices the unit, the access, the flashing kit and the internal making good separately. There is no obligation, and the price you accept is the price you pay.
Your home protected while we work
We position dust sheets beneath the opening and clear the room with you before any cutting begins. The roof is left weathertight at the end of every working visit, with the battens and underlay kept dry. Every other room remains in use while the installation continues.
The opening cut and the unit fitted
One team cuts the opening, trims the timbers where the survey requires it, and installs the unit. The flashing is then weathered into the surrounding tiles or slates. A director oversees the installation from the initial visit to completion.
Finished inside as well as out
The reveal is made good and left ready for decoration, and the glazing is left clean. A director inspects the flashing from the roof and the reveal from the room below. The handover documentation for the unit is provided in writing.

Frequently asked questions
Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Skylight Installation service in Gosport.
What decides the price of a skylight installation in Gosport?
Three elements move the price more than anything else:
- The unit: its dimensions, its glazing, and whether it opens or is fixed
- The access: a tower beside the elevation, or scaffolding to the eaves
- The making good: the reveal, the plastering and the decoration around it
Those three are priced as separate lines, so nothing is combined into a single figure. There is no obligation and there are no hidden extras.
Do I need scaffolding for a skylight installation in Gosport?
That is determined by the roof itself, not by a general policy. A single unit is frequently installed from a tower positioned at the eaves. On Gosport’s two-storey terraces and estate semis that is usually sufficient. The taller villas closer to the harbour stand higher off the ground, and those roofs need scaffolding to the ridge. The survey establishes which, and the quote includes whatever access the installation needs, arranged and removed as part of the work.
Who supplies the skylight unit for a Gosport installation?
We source and supply units matched to the roof and the room. A unit you have already purchased is installed wherever it is suitable for the opening. Where it is not, we will state that clearly before any cutting begins. Our own team then installs the unit, forms the kerb and weathers the flashing on every Gosport installation, with no subcontracted labour.
Can a skylight be fitted to an older Gosport roof?
Usually, provided the battens, underlay and rafters around the opening are sound. Gosport’s oldest roofs sit on the Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas near Portsmouth Harbour, roofed in slate and clay tile, while the naval estates further out carry concrete interlocking tile from later in the 20th century. Where the roof’s overall condition is in doubt, a roof inspection establishes what it can carry before any cutting begins. We will advise against opening a covering at the end of its service life.
How do I arrange a skylight installation in Gosport?
Call us or complete the contact form. We respond within 48 hours. A director then attends to measure the opening, inspect the rafters around it and discuss what the room requires. The installation is scheduled for a date that suits you, and the unit is ordered as soon as you accept the quote. At the 2021 Census, the town had a population of 70,131 and the district had a population of 81,952. Gosport is situated on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour, opposite the city of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by the Gosport Ferry.
Until the last quarter of the 20th century, Gosport was a major naval town associated with the defence and supply infrastructure of His Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth. As such over the years extensive fortifications were created. Gosport is still home to HMS Sultan and a Naval Armament Supply Facility, as well as a helicopter repair base.
As part of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Millennium project, a large sundial, known as the Millennium Timespace, was installed on the harbour front in 2000. Alongside this sundial, a long meandering path of designed paving stones can be found, known as the Millennium Path; this can also be seen across the Solent in Portsmouth.
