Roofing Services in Portsmouth
C J Roofing & Renewables Ltd specialises in domestic and commercial roofing across Portsmouth, for homeowners, landlords and businesses. Our own team carries out urgent repairs, full replacements, flat roofing, guttering, chimney work, cladding and solar panel installation. Terraced roofs across the city run continuously from one party wall to the next, and chimney stacks are commonly shared between neighbouring properties. The terraces and villas in Southsea are late Georgian and early Victorian, while the estate housing at Paulsgrove was completed in the 1950s. Before anything is priced, a director inspects the roof and reports which trades the repair involves. The written, itemised quote follows within 48 hours of that survey. We respond within 48 hours.

Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Roofing services in Portsmouth.
Do you offer free, no-obligation quotes for roofing work in Portsmouth?
Yes. Every project begins with a free site survey conducted by a director, and there is no obligation at any stage. The director examines the slopes, the flashings, the gutters and the chimney stack, and photographs every defect identified. Each item of work and its material specification are listed in the written, itemised quote, and there are no hidden extras.
How quickly can you respond if I have a roofing emergency in Portsmouth?
A genuine emergency receives a telephone callback within 24 hours. The initial visit is a make-safe: the team refixes displaced tiles, covers open lead flashing and prevents further water entering the roof before the full repair is scheduled. A month of rain has fallen on Southsea in less than a day, and water at that rate overtops the valley between two terraced roofs before reaching the downpipe. The emergency roof repair page sets out the make-safe procedure.
Do you take on smaller repairs as well as full re-roofs in Portsmouth?
Yes. Slipped tiles, cracked verge mortar, lifted lead flashing, gutter clears and single chimney pots are everyday work on Portsmouth roofs. A director surveys and quotes each of them in writing, in the same way as a full re-roof. A mid-terrace roof has no gable elevation for access, so the rear pitch is reached over the ridge. On the Southsea villas the gutter sits behind a parapet, and a failed lead outlet is relined.
Do you handle insurance work for roof damage in Portsmouth?
Yes. Storm damage, fire, accidental damage and impact from falling branches are handled as insurance work. The claim is supported by a written report and dated photographs of the damage, and a director corresponds with the loss adjuster directly where the insurer appoints one. On a continuous terraced roof the damage is rarely confined to one property, so the report and the photographs cover the adjoining roofs as well.
What is the next step if I want a quote in Portsmouth?
A telephone call or the contact form is the next step, and a director books the survey. The director measures each elevation and records the pitch, the access arrangements and the condition of the lead and the verges. The quote is issued in writing, and the team begins the work on an agreed date. The same procedure applies across every part of Portsmouth.

Most of Portsmouth is located on Portsea Island, off the south coast of England in the Solent, making Portsmouth the only city in England not located primarily on the mainland. The city is located 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Southampton, 50 miles (80 km) west of Brighton and Hove and 74 miles (119 km) south-west of London. With a population last recorded at 208,100, it is the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom. Portsmouth forms part of the South Hampshire urban area with Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Eastleigh and Southampton.
Portsmouth’s history can be traced to Roman times and it has contained a significant Royal Navy dockyard and base for centuries. Portsmouth was founded c. 1180 by Anglo-Norman merchant Jean de Gisors in the south-west area of Portsea Island, a location now known as Old Portsmouth. Around this time, de Gisors ordered the construction of a chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket. This became a parish church by the 14th century. Portsmouth was established as a town with a royal charter on 2 May 1194. The city is home to the first drydock ever built. It was constructed by Henry VII in 1496.
Portsmouth has the world’s oldest dry dock currently in use, “The Great Stone Dock”; originally built in 1698, rebuilt in 1769 and presently known as “No.5 Dock”. The world’s first mass production line was established at the naval base’s Block Mills which produced pulley blocks for the Royal Navy. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered “the world’s greatest naval port” at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. By 1859, a ring of defensive land and sea forts, known as the Palmerston Forts, had been built around Portsmouth in anticipation of an invasion from continental Europe.
In the 20th century, Portsmouth achieved city status on 21 April 1926. During the Second World War, the city was bombed extensively in the Portsmouth Blitz, which resulted in the deaths of 930 people, and it was a pivotal embarkation point for the D-Day landings. In 1982, a British task force departed from Portsmouth to serve in the Falklands War. HMY Britannia was formerly based in Portsmouth and oversaw the transfer of Hong Kong in 1997, after which Britannia was retired from royal service, decommissioned and relocated to Leith as a museum ship.
